Transition by Iain Banks. There's one character that really stands out, Adrian Cubbish. He's such a great character that I named my reddit name after him. There are other RP characters in the book, such as The Philosopher, but being a sci fi novel, they're a bit twisted.

Sperm Wars by Robin Baker is a very good look at how our bodies affect our mating behaviour. It's not completely comprehensive and does not deal with larger social issues and trends, but the science is accessible to the somewhat educated layperson.
