Imagine the rumor being that you actually are a virgin.

Now imagine the rumor saying you're just a normal kinda guy.

Now imagine the rumor mill says you're a heart breaker who has slept with 100 girls this semester already. Girls saying you're great in bed, other girls saying you're shit in bed, guys saying you're a stud, other guys saying you're a user of women. Female here, dated a couple of guys with a large number of sexual partners. The first had a huge string of one night stands - was a huge turn on. Second had a huge number of committed romantic partners - not so much.

Like others have said promiscuity won't hurt your game - quite the opposite. Just don't throw around your resources (doesn't sound like you are) and you'll reap the rewards.

Women are attracted to men that are attractive to other women. Having a promiscuous reputation is beneficial. It preselects you as a desirable male.

The fact you've slept with lots of women proves your worth. If a girl hears that all her friends have slept with you, you have already been validated as a worthwhile sexual partner to her. Let your female friends talk about it, and how much of a player you are. What girls say is often different from what they feel.
