There are really two simple reasons:

First, sexual dimorphism enhances survival prospects in times when food is scarce. Put another way, in a mammal group, who is going to hunt for food more easily, an able-bodied male or a heavily pregnant female?

Second, cross-breeding allows for the enhancement of the organism. For example, if one type of shellfish is good in salt water, and another in cold, if they simply replicated themselves, those traits would remain separate. But with cross breeding through males, they can benefit from both.

This type of article uses some headline-grabber as click-bait--"Are Males Still Necessary?" shit like that.

I think some of you are misinterpreting this article. I read it as an indictment of Puritan morality and Roman one-man one-woman marriage. If I read it correctly, it's only saying that nature favors sexual reproduction because species do best when alpha males reproduce a lot and beta males not very much. It's Red Pill research.

Sexual dimorphism provides genetic diversity in a species. One disease will not wipe them all out. This is why insectiside and microbiotics create super bugs. The section of the population succeptible to the poison dies, leaving only the immune ones left. Then this immune section reproduces and passes on those 'immunity traits' to their offspring. Eventually, the whole population is immune.

With asexual organisms, they have to clone themselves, making every member of the species really similar, very little genetic mutation takes place. The only thing that saves them from disaster is sheer numbers.

Why is one gender a baby making machine, and the other is 'just' a sperm donor? Because the specialized division of labor provides optimized efficiency.
