There is a subtle, dangerous implication that comes with the fact that women aren't funny. Humor is tied with intelligence. Thus, as the reasoning goes, women are less intelligent. I think that's why there was such a shitstorm over this article.

Women have a tough time being funny because they can't take a joke

I forget where I heard that one, but it stuck. It's fun to say it in a group, watch the women go batshit and then see the faces change as they realize they just validated the statement.

Try doing it next time you're in a group- it's gold.

I do think men are more aloof then women, and this makes them more prone to being humorous than women... but I'm not sure I'd immediately jump to the conclusion that this is evolutionary. It could be, but there isn't much evidence to support that. I completely disagree with the notion that guys have to be funny to get girls. I don't really think it factors in as much as people think it does.

In terms of stand up, I think the delivery is probably the most important factor... and mastering the delivery is easier for the guys - you have to be confident, assertive, and loud on occasion. If you are hesitant, or exude even a little bit of being unsure of yourself, you will fail.

As far as comedy writing goes, I think women can actually be better at complex forms of humor. I think Tina Fey is probably one of the best examples of this, where a lot of her jokes are layered and complex. Typically, masculine men are more often straight to the point. That is not to say men can't do the same, but its usually men who are a bit more feminine (John Lovitz, Jerry Seinfeld, and to some degree Chris Rock).

A master polemicist. It was hard to disagree with Hitch. If you haven't read any of his works, they are all highly recommended. You might also enjoy this. It seems he shared our mindset. I genuinely miss him (or at least his works, we never met obvs.)
