Here is what really happens imo: girls (that age especially) get hit on by men of a large variety, many above and many below her value (men readily lower their standards to get laid, we all know it). Girls (especially young and naive ones) being human, naturally chose the best... which by definition is a guy out of her league. These men are painfully aware that the girl is beneath them and move on after the sexual encounter(s). The girl feels hurt but sacrificing on quality is hard and unnatural so therefore moves on to the next most attractive guy available to her. The cycle goes on until she feels her value is dropping through the floor and she "settles" for a guy around her level.

To conclude:

Modern dating in 20s for girls: Sleep with higher quality men than yourself who are unwilling to commit.

Modern dating in 20s for men: Sleep with women significantly beneath yourself in terms of attractiveness or get nothing at all (and there is a large number that in fact gets nothing at all despite lowering standards).

They do it to fit in. They don't enjoy it as much as they tell themselves and everyone else they do, but all their friends are slutting it up, so they slut it up. Can't fall behind those other bitches!

My opinion on this.

1) Women are primarily concerned with securing resources for their offspring.

2) To this end, women have evolved a sexual strategy whereby they mate with as many high status men as possible. (status = access to resources)

3) when they have their babies, all the high status men of the tribe think the baby (or babies) might be his, so they theoretically have secured all those men they fucked as providers.

4) Therefore, concealing sluttiness is important in terms of securing resources. If each man doesn't know she fucked any other, well....

4) The danger of fucking low status men is huge because if a high status man thinks the woman's offspring could possibly be that of a low status man's, who is not well-liked, the probability of extracting resources goes way down. To ensure the perception that no mating took place, women make sure to treat low-status men as horribly as possible, especially in public.

Women want to fuck alphas. Alphas can fuck most anyone, so they do. They don't commit.
