At this point the question might just be rhetorical. They know that something went wrong but years of hamstering away all of the bad decisions has left their mind unable to form logical thought patterns that could lead them to the true answer. Thus they use the "where are the promised good guys that are supposed to whisk us away and make everything OK?" question to justify the fact that they are single, lonely, and unwanted. In the meantime they can garner some pity while asking this question to squeeze out a little more attention - something that we know women crave above all else.
Basically women get at a fundamental level that they done goofed, but hamster gotta hamster and this is their way of not dealing with the consequences of their own actions. Makes me think of that stupid song where the chorus is the woman saying "look what you made me do" over and over.

I had this discussion with a female friend last night. Basically, she said her whole life she was told and guys affirmed that she was special and deserved shit. Once she got older she realized the only person who can make her happy is herself and she doesn't deserve or want anything from anyone. It was rough for her but worth it.
