Studies of truly tribal societies (the Amazon, Papua New Guinea, etc) indicate that tribes tend to be pretty open sexually from an early age. Like, a disgustingly early age. There's a lot of fuckin goin around.

Possession of women is a fairly recent development, largely accompanying the rise of agriculture and the accumulation of great wealth. You also see during this period that there are numerous Y chromosome bottlenecks because men started slaughtering each other at insane rates as pussy suddenly became a limited resource. Patrilineal inheritance probably didn't help the situation, either.

This is where people get mixed up about evolutionary psychology. We have a hard time picturing just how small society was back in hunter-gatherer days. People lived in kin groups of 10 to 250, and it was normal for people to not really care who was fucking who.

Notably, in a lot of these cultures there was not a clear understanding that sex even led to pregnancy. Kids just appeared, basically. The gods blessed you, and that was that.

The underlying point is that hardcore, monogamous commitment was a borderline alien concept during that time period. Kin groups were far more worried about outsiders from the next valley over than they were about other members of the kin group.

It should also be noted that raiding for war brides was a common release for social-sexual conflicts well into Middle Ages. Given the use of slaves as breeding partners, one can argue the practice existed well into the 1800s. This probably explains the impulse of incels to start slaughtering people in order to stand out socially, since riding to war was once a good way to obtain a mate.

Keep in mind that in a truly tribal society, the Y chromosome is going to hold up pretty well competitively because the other guys in your kin group are . . . ya know . . . pretty much inbred clones of you. It's not all that relevant, from a "selfish gene" standpoint, exactly which inbred clone does the seeding. It's also why a lot of women's visual sexual cues are basically scans for extreme genetic defects . . . because . . . ya know . . . kids with flippers don't handle a bow and arrow so well.

This also why racism is pretty hardcoded into our DNA. The clear visual indication that someone hasn't been part of your kin groups cycle of relentless child fucking is a sign of serious competition. It probably also explains why we find the exotic to so sexually appealing, since the introduction of outside DNA discourages having kids with flippers.

In other words, don't think too hard about. It was fuckin gross back then. And inbred AF.

Also, evolution moves faster than we admit. As we begin to look at epigentic factors -- which are transmitted through sexual reproduction more than we through even a decade ago -- driven by deprivation and competition, evolution can move at a terrifying pace. Look, for example, at the emergence of violence in Chechnya. In two centuries, a pastoral, backwater society basically becomes psychotically bred for war. So, don't assume your genetic story has much to do with the waywayback time.

And the dopamine factor counts for a lot, since it reinforces reward mechanisms that might not have even been available to your ancestors a century ago.

How do we reconcile this with the fact that women have evolutionarily depended entirely on the commitment of men for their and their offspring's survival?

Women don't require one man to solely provide both alpha genes and resources; they'll happily have two men do it. This is why house wives will fuck Chad and Tyrone while their beta bucks husband is at work.

If you read the first couple chapters of the rational male you would know this.

Back then everybody relied on everybody for survival. Back then commitment meant you actually lived long enough to commit. People weren't Living 85 years like they do today. I'm pretty sure the amount of men that fathered children wasn't particularly high as well.

In tribal times, men raped hot women without a single concern about consequences. The women were part of a tribe, so generally the entire tribe took care of the children. Often the men wouldn’t be in the picture because most of their time was spent hunting and protecting and raping other women. There wasn’t much monogamy going on.
