Go on cscareerquestions, learnprogramming and learnpython subs here on reddit, plenty of info in their sidebars.

I am currently self learning to move into soft dev, as well, but it's tough bro. Expect minimum 20-25 hours per week for a long ass time.

Python in itself can be ok if you go into data science, although there are still other things to learn. It's a lot libraries, frameworks, don't think that if you can do a for loop in python which is super easy that you can program complicated stuff, that takes a lot of practice.

But head to those 3 subs and search on there, plenty of self taught guys there who got jobs in soft eng. Most of your questions will already be answered on sidebars or if you just search those subs. Or just post yourself.

You won’t be able to get a good job by just learning python. The best free option would be to learn a few languages and build a portfolio of projects. A better option would be to get a certificate from a bootcamp

Find a simple problem solvable by programming (It doesnt matter if its already been solved) and finish it
Python
1. 3.7
2. Understand how terminal works to run your code. Don't rely on an IDE
3. Create virtual environments https://virtualenv.pypa.io/en/latest/ so you dont fuck up your system python install
4. Use the python reference and understand syntax and concepts
Stackoverflow is your bible. Learn how to ask questions correctly and search. Obfuscate code that identifies you if posting.

1. Don't commit credentials

Yes, its worth learning but for a self learner the fastest way to dev is to laterally move within your company. Easy foot in the door and large exposure to other items.

Money on the side - Not worth the headache in my opinion. During your day job you will be harassed by your customers about open items. You start your "second" job once you get home from your first. Customers will add "scope creep" to your work which makes your workload never ending and the job will never be "done done". Not only do they add scope but they will tell you X, Y and Z are not done because "obviously they meant for you to add Y". They will either refuse to pay or bitch about it.

70k out of the gate from college to fortune 100 company. It would probably be the same for a lateral move within a large company.

Practice. Practice. Practice. Spend at least 1/2 an hour daily coding. Don't just dump your energy into tutorials and call it a day, start using that knowledge into good use and build things for your portfolio.

Python itself is an easy to learn language and gets you through the door for data science and machine learning careers though it may not be for everyone. If you want to go more towards software development, then you should focus more on JavaScript with Python backend. Really the branches are endless, just depends on what you're aiming for

Source: self taught developer. Took me 6 months to go from 0 knowledge to getting employed doing remote work. Keeping with the spirits of TRP, I'd say consistency and drive is key. Even if there're days when you don't feel like it - you got to grind it out even with just a few lines of code each day. Don't overthink it and learn the fundamentals - before long you'll realize that at its core, all languages are basically the same.
