Wouldn't you say the concept of red pill is a philosophy itself? Stoicism is about as masculine a concept/philosophy as it gets. I also dabble in eastern philosophy, especially karma yoga. There are a lot of parallels between stoicism and karma yoga if you're smart enough to read between the lines.

For example, one of the central concepts of karma yoga (and stoicism) is to focus on what you can control and let go (i.e. not give a fuck about what you can't.

Going to the gym, lifting weights. That's what you can control. Approaching someone too. Whether you get rejected or not is not entirely in your control, so don't be bothered by it. Just keep working on things you can control and get better at it.

TRP isn't a philosophy. Nor does it try to define masculinity. It's a bunch of observations subject to constant scrutiny (and change), so it's hard to pin down what exactly it is. But if I had to choose one of the key themes I'd say it's learning to keep your mind open to the acceptance of ideas that might not be completely compatible with your world view.

That is largely orthogonal to any particular philosophical view of life.

Of course, we can arbitrarily extend the definition of "philosophy" to include anything we want, but I'll give you enough credit to assume you aren't trying to use that line of reasoning.

No offense taken. I'll ask again: which parts of Meditations did you like? I didn't find anything in there to be particularly enlightening.

You pretty much nailed it here:

But I don't need to read a book from centuries ago that wasn't even written in English to learn that. A particularly well written blog post can accomplish the same thing, with the bonus of using modern prose and relevant examples e.g. going to the gym and lifting weights because physical strength and aesthetics are within your control to change.

Contrast this with Marcus Aurelius who will tell you something along the lines of "you have power over your mind - not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength." A nice thought, sure, but it reads more like a viral facebook post than actual advice. Your line that I quoted is better than anything in the entire book.

That something was written a thousand years ago, or in an obscure way, doesn't make it an inherently better read. People tout Machiavelli's The Prince to be an important read to learn how to emotionally manipulate others, but I would argue that there are more efficient ways to learn the same information.

Even if my main man Marcus was the first hombre to put stoicism down on paper, it doesn't mean there aren't better, more modern sources to study, given the limited amount of time we have in life. If you like the topic in an academic sense then read it. But it's not going to be my first suggestion, and I'm a bit cynical about how it inevitably makes it onto every reddit reading list.

Good writing is clear and concise, independent of who the author is and when it was written.
