Maybe you should read the bit abt you to ask for a raise in the CorporateLand section of the sidebar. I have it on strong authority that that guy knows his shit.

Depending on circumstances, ask for at least a 10-15% increase.

Don’t compare yourself to the other guy and don’t let on that you know his salary. Step out on your own merit and advance in your own right.

If the business is growing, you should be growing with it or move on.

How is a report making 2x+ more than you? That’s insane. Even if you’re a 1099 and they’re full time, that’s crazy. Usually contractors on 1099 make a little more to because FT employees get benefits. That’d be like me making half of what my analysts make when I do the heavy lifting for reporting, create the vision for future data, and shield them from clients. Absurd.

That being said, don’t let the person responsible for dishing out raises know that you know someone else’s salary, but when renegotiating is prepare a couple things:

Look up your role on payscale.com and fill in the little quiz that asks for all your skills, experience, and demographic info to get a good bar for what median salary is. That’ll give you some hard numbers to go off of.

Then, start interviewing at other places for similar roles and start asking for the 90% percentile to 75% percentile when they ask for salary expectations. If they are willing to play ball, they’ll either entertain the idea or reject you and you can move on.

Every company I’ve worked for I’ve done this and then told my current employer about it. One had a visceral reaction and I got hired by the other company, the other wanted to increase salary but said something about budget so now I’m at my current job.

Over the span of 4 years, I’ve gone from 42k to 110k in yearly salary this way. Haven’t read TRP sidebar for negotiations, but had good mentors along the way.

I once negotiated a $30K raise but that was by saying that I had an offer from another company (which was true) paying me $30K more (not quite true). The pres approved it on the spot. It was a ballsy move but it paid off. You need to know your true value to them or at least how they perceive your value. You also need to understand how much power the guy you're talking to actually has. He may be your boss, but in a bigger company, he may have ZERO power in getting you a raise cuz it's all set by corporate blah blah blah.

Outline your strengths and how you've contributed to the company in a well articulated self-review.

If you want to be machivalean demonstrate your loyalty too by explaining how you've turned down other lucrative offers.

This doesn’t quite add up. What kind of people do you have reporting to you? What position of alleged authority pays <40k to begin with?

You aren't underpaid. You're getting exactly what he agreed to.

The guy who reports to you is getting exactly what he agreed to.

Ask for what you want. Don't bring up the other guy's earnings. You should have been applying for positions with other companies as well.

Start interviewing. Get another offer. Ask for a raise to 100k. If they say no quit.

When u interview, DO NOT TELL THEM UR CURRENT SALARY WHEN THEY ASK, “interpret” the question as “how much do I want u to pay me” and go w 80-90k. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT. Whenever I get asked the question, I say “I’m looking for $$$ for this position.” Which netted me another 20k this year.
