Can you get a similar position at another company? That's the real test to know if this is a good opportunity or not.

My guess is that you could find another company that would be happy to put you in a management position and compensate you fairly at the same time.

This is a weird question.

They let you interview as a hire-from-within candidate, but selected someone else from within? or a new hire?

Either way, letting you intern..internally (for a company you already work for)..for a position someone else got is an odd situation. It sounds like they don't think you're ready yet, and want to train you for later conversion.

If you get a pay increase, and perform the full role of the position, I don't see why this is a problem (for you). It seems weird that the company would willingly pay two people to do the work of one though.

Either way this isn't a TRP question whatsoever. Shoehorning any and all life situations/choices into TRP theory isn't necessary, and often doesn't work.

Edit to add:

It's been stated that talking to your SO about work-related drama/issues is usually bad form. They usually don't care about what you do at work unless you're succeeding.
