How much are you spending for a undergraduate degree? At 30 years old you have to consider whether saving your tuition fee would be a better alternative.

The people I know who took up economics for their undergrad degree took up post-graduate degrees after. If you want to get a job after graduating, you have to get very high grades. That would be the only way you would stand out from younger people who will graduate at the same time as you.

You don't mention what your career is, so it's hard to say if an economics degree will help you and therefore be worth the investment. Closely related to econ is actuary science, which is one of the most in-demand jobs out there. You can generally make more than an engineering degree.

Can you get your employer to pay for it and study part time? If you haven't asked, I would bring it up in your next review.

Worked in the trades (electrician) in the US before the housing market crash in 2008-2009. I already had 2 years of college under my belt before that. Went back to school (as opposed to sitting around collecting unemployment) and finished my bachelors in computer security in my 40s.

I've been employed in cyber security since 2011, and I enjoy the work and make good bank... in the past 5 years, I've gotten to about 2x what I was making in the trades.

Each situation is different, but a mid life career change is definitely possible.
