I'd say if it happens a lot, it's an IOI. Perhaps pre-selection.

It's probably not a shit test... but it might be a polite/casual conversational topic. It's all context dependent. You could always test it out and ask these girls "out for coffee" and see how it plays out.

listen to their tone/vibe but often its all of the above at the same time. it's a shit tests in the form of a yes/no question, saying no seems like a fail, saying yes would probably elevate your attraction but that's a road you probably don't wanna go down. ''fancy titles'' would be my personal used line here.

This question has only arisen for me in flirting situations. If she wasn't interested, she wouldn't give a shit if you had a GF or not. In fact she would go out of her way NOT to ask this question precisely because of its connotations as an IOI.

As to how to answer, the most widely advocated response from older members is "it's complicated." Another that I have used with some success is "well I have someone who wants the job". Of course, other users claim that simply saying "no" or even "yes" has gotten them in. I'm of the opinion that the answer doesn't matter much. Assume attraction and behave accordingly.
