Yes and no.

Most insecure people don't suddenly become narcissists or sociopaths, they just remain insecure.

Certain genetically dis-positioned people can be influenced by environmental factors such as insecurity among other things during early development, which can lead to them developing into dark triad personality types.

It's a complicated issue that can't really be fully understood, there's too many variables and no tangible way to qualitatively measure it.

Even if there were, due to it being seen as a negative thing by society and the ease of which these traits can be hidden by the individual, we'd still not get accurate figures.

What we can say though is if you're not dark triad by 16-18 then it's not going to happen.

The traits and outward behaviour that are linked with it are irrelevant if its only skin deep frame, its whats going on internally that matters.

I also wouldn't believe everything you believe from psychologists assessments on the subject, it's not possible to understand something completely through second hand experience and observation.

If i asked you what chocolate tasted like, you could describe it to someone but it'd be a poor substitute for actually experiencing the taste, they'd still never understand unless they'd actually tasted it.

Taking the same approach for Narcissism, a psychologist can make observations on a socially un-calibrated individual with narcissism (most aren't, they learn to hide it) and take guesses on what's going on in their head but it's impossible to truly comprehend what you've not experienced.

Not necessarily, true dark triad traits stem from developmental years during upbringing. If a child is harmed, their brain struggles to develop the capacity for empathy. Psychopathy (one of the three traits) can be both nature and 'nurture' though.
