Future career prospects

Never choose your major on the basis that "X company/institution looks better at major Y than major Z". It's your life and your choice.

It's a subject you're going to have to study every day, and eventually revise for exams in. You want it to be something that won't be complete miserable drudgery.

Being an entrepreneur isn't something you get taught at school. As a business major you have more skills to manage company but less chance to invent/construct a worthwhile product to sell, which an engineer can more easily do.

Do something what you like and which has good options in the future. Not because you're impressed with what somebody wrote on an internet forum.

I'm seriously considering switching to a business major

Graduated last year with a Business degree. It's not going to give you self employment. Only you can give yourself that. Additionally, you can build a business around any idea even if you stay in engineering. You could make a training program, manufacture a helpful product, or work with people one-on-one.

Build a good peer group of like-minded people. Or read voraciously on the subject. 4 Hour Workweek, Rich Dad Poor Dad, and a bunch of others get mentioned a lot as basics.

To make the self-employment thing work you have to figure out how to make yourself productive and efficient. Motivating yourself to wake up and get your ass handed to you everyday is a huge reason people don't take the leap. It takes someone who can be honest with themselves.

And those people that say go for security can fuck themselves. There is no job security, it's an illusion. Think of it this way, you're going to fucking die. No do-overs, no second chances. Go for broke. Do what excites you and challenges you.

I hire people for our company.

Two things- A business degree is fairly easy- generic etc. An engineering degree opens different doors. Having a strong engineering background can give you great opportunities. I have an old friend with an engineering physics background who started his own company and should break bank here pretty soon. My brother has an engineering/business degree and does consulting work. Makes a shit ton. And just got a sweet job as a #2 at a great company.

The trick is- be the best person you can be. Work hard. Make great contacts (intern intern intern intern). you can start a business with any kind of degree. You can always hire people to do the work you don't understand.

You can always minor in business or go get an MBA post school. An engineering degree does not mean you will work for someone. It may mean you freelance, consult, or start your own company.
