The concept of bulking and cutting is bullshit to be honest. It's bad nutritional advice or less you're overweight, in which case you should cut to loose the pounds.

Ideally you want to loose weight and lean up to 10% body fat, you should be aiming to get a nice lean 6 pack before you do anything else.

Then from there you don't need to bulk. You just need to eat a little extra food to compensate for the fact you are weight lifting. This is normally only 100-200 calories over maintenance. Or 10% which is optimal for muscle growth.

You shouldn't really put a massive amount of fat back on. And even if you do, you should be able to loose it in a month. If it takes longer than a month then you bulked too hard and you ate too much.

Remember 1.6g of protein per kg of body weight is the essential macro for building muscles. It doesn't matter of you're cutting or bulking you will still build muscle.

Don't put unnecessary fat on. You will just look like shit.

Eating extra food is essentially a bulk. I’m pretty sure you need to be in a total surplus to build muscle because I’ve been eating way more than 1.6g of protein per kg and I’m definitely not gaining mass

[–]Ravenscar71 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

A moderate surplus like I said which is normally 10% over maintenance.

This is what I do when I go on a bulk. I start with a 10% surplus. If I'm still loosing weight I go to 20% surplus.

I keep bumping up the calories 100 calories at a time per month until I stop loosing weight.

Then I know my sweet spot will be 100 calories over the point I stopped loosing weight.

If you're struggling to out on mass check your volume.

Look up MRV maximum recoverable volume. There is PhD fitness got on YouTube who has made good videos about if.

Basically you want to be hitting a volume of 20-30 sets let muscle every 8 days.

End of the day mate I've been lifting for 2 years now and I've only spent 5 months of that in a bulk. I've made most of my gains in a calorie deficit and now I have the ideal physique. (I have the same physique as the last natural on YouTube).

[–]makemoneyfuck33 1 points1 points1 points 7 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Fair enough. So how do figure how much you’re eating? Are you counting every single thing? Isn’t that a pain in the ass?

[–]Ravenscar70 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Yeah you will have to count every calories otherwise you won't get anywhere.

It's not that difficult if you stick to the same diet everyday and mebe be more relaxed on the weekend.

I mean if you're not counting calories then you've probably never been in a surplus to build muscle.

You need use s tdee calculator to work out your maintenance first.

It could be a lot higher than you think if you're very tall. Also tall people will find it difficult to build muscle. You simply need to build more muscle to notice. This means you can probably get away with higher surpluses because being tall means you have a crazy metabolism.

[–]makemoneyfuck33 1 points1 points1 points 7 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

So if I don’t count everything then I won’t ever be able to build muscle?

[–]Ravenscar70 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You need to know whether youre in a calorie surplus or not. You can't do that without counting calories.

fat=cut

skinny=bulk

fat but want to gain muscle?=cut then bulk

[–]makemoneyfuck33 1 points1 points1 points 7 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

So if I can’t see abs cut and if I can see them bulk?

[–]itsBoundless 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

If you can't see abs it could also be that you don't have enough muscle. So if you are skinny right now, bulk and then cut and you should start seeing an outline. If you are chubby cut and depending on your natural frame you may have abs.

[–]makemoneyfuck33 1 points1 points1 points 7 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Define too thin. Because I don’t have much muscle so if I want get lean I’ll have to get down to probably 150-155

[–]itsBoundless 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

If you don't have too much muscle then bulk and then cut and you'll see abs.

Talk to your doctor and get a solid reading on your BMI.

Over 20% and you should cut, under you determine what your goals are and set up a clean diet.

[–]Divine_Instrument0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Do you mean bodyfat percentage? BMI is a index number and isn’t a percentage of anything as far as I know.

[–]Divine_Instrument0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Are you skinny fat? If so, I’d say go by bodyfat percentage. Cut down to sub 15% bodyfat and then think about bulking.

It would be helpful to know your height and weight.

[–]makemoneyfuck33 1 points1 points1 points 7 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

5’9-5’10 and like 178-179. I can bench my body weight for a rep so I’m not extremely weak. I think I should cut but at the same time I’m not particularly strong (like the majority of you all are) so I’m worried that cutting is just going to make me get weak

[–]Divine_Instrument0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

You won’t be cutting enough weight regardless to lose significant amount of strength. Either way you want to bulk and build muscle at some point anyway.

I don’t know your body fat percentage which honestly is the most important measure. Most guys would want to be between 10 to 14% before bulking. Just guessing at your body fat levels I’d say try to cut down to like 165 and then bulk just to be safe. If you lift and diet right you shouldn’t lose much if any strength. If you do, it’s still better to cut and then bulk properly than to just blindly bulk and have to lose fat later.

[–]makemoneyfuck33 1 points1 points1 points 7 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

I’m thinking I should get down to like 150-155 maybe.

[–]Divine_Instrument0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I don’t know. You don’t want to overdo it. Just go by how you look. Once you’re lean get on a strength program and start bulking.

[–]kril890 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

If you are above 15% bodyfat cut, if you are below do a nice clean bulk and cut back down to like 12% and see what you look like.

I'm skinny fat, started at 162lbs and 28% body fat at 5-7. I started losing weight in August i'm down to 136lbs and 17-19% body fat with most of that just being from diet. I just started back at the gym 3 weeks ago. Once I get to 125-130 i'll be at like 12-15% body fat. Once I get to that i'll bulk for awhile and see where I end up.

[–]makemoneyfuck33 1 points1 points1 points 7 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

What calculator are you using to get your bf numbers?

How’s your strength progressing?

[–]kril890 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

You have to get a body fat caliper or get an scale that does it. I prefer to use a body fat caliper because the electric ones never work well for me. My strength is advancing but since I'm in a caloric deficit I'm not gaining strength optimally. So right now I'm just getting my noobie gains back from all the years of on and off at the gym.

[–]makemoneyfuck33 1 points1 points1 points 7 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

What about online calculators? I don’t really know how to use a body fat caliper.

[–]kril890 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You can't get body fat using an online calculator without a caliper. You can guess using a picture of how you look and what a certain body fat percentage looks like (Google it) but the answer to all your questions are on Google how do you think I found them?

[–]alt415100 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Not enough info or pics to say bulk or cut, BUT not matter what you decide, EAT CLEAN MOTHERFER

[–]makemoneyfuck33 1 points1 points1 points 7 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

I’m about 5’9-5’10 and im at 178 and should probably get to 155

[–]alt415100 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Foreal? Im like 5 10 around 200-210 after a bulk, 175-185 after a cut
