Nah, just ring her up, exchange greetings and then make your move. You will avoid the risk of the convo wandering etc. Plus it shows confidence and dominance.

Use something like "Hey, if you're free this Thursday, I'd like to invite you to do {x} with me." Or whatever your move is.

Don't pussy foot around. If she says yes, then great, set up logistics and then let her go.

If she says no, then that's how it goes. If she says "I'm busy on Thursday but I'm free on {y}" then adjust on the fly."

If she asks if you "need her help planning" say "nope. Just be ready at {time}", and tell her what the dress code is (if applicable). So if I'm taking a girl to an event where it would not otherwise be obvious, I say something like "I will be wearing {polo & jeans, sport coat, tuxedo, whatever } so the dress code is whatever fashionable young ladies where when men are wearing {clothes}"
