As long as they're done correctly and not coming from a place of supplication, I feel like a well placed compliment can help you along in terms of escalating things.

As a general rule, I never START with compliments in any situation. I use them much later on after I've built rapport/comfort and use it as a chance to comment on something about her that caught my eye.

A girl I was dealing with recently, for example had a nice set of hands (I generally love women's hands anyway). I complimented her on it, used some massage and palm reading techniques I learned and the rest was history.

Another girl I used to work with had beautiful hair and a lovely set of green eyes. I got to know her, she got her hair cut one day, which made for easy conversation and I commented on how it, "really brought out her eyes" and took it from there.
