Practice cold approach during the Summer. That way when you go to parties and meet random people, you won't come off as a creep when you try and talk to that hot girl. Meeting new people at parties = semi-cold approach, with consequences. Cold approaching random people at the mall doesn't really have consequences.

Ramble ramble, seem moderately interested in the topic at hand, so pick a subject you can talk about, and then casually drop facts about yourself occasionally

reminds me of (interesting fact about you).

Wait for IOIs/personal questions, then casually ramp up from asking not-so-personal personal questions to asking her name and number

Use lots of filler and let her ramble too. You want her to develope familiarity with you, so aime for 10+ minute conversation. It should not be obvious at all that you're going to ask her her number until the last 5 minutes of the conversation.

Talk about anything: objects in the room, the weather, how long the line is you're waiting on, the food in the restaurant, what's on the TV that's on, etc. Just break the ice. That's the first step.

Understand that the cold approach is sort of the fighter pilot of meeting girls. It's definitely the hard way. Of course, in high school, you all know each other, at least by face and name.

A true cold approach involved people who've never seen each other.

Anyway, one start is just, "Hi, I'm /u/Joshtrp. Have you seen the latest <whatever hot tv show is on>?"

Alternately, "Do you go to <insert sport here> games?"
