putting yourself first is gonna come across as being an asshole or dick to other people who expect to be able to use you and then you finally stand up for yourself.

Be selfish. Dont be "appropriately selfish" It's like you're asking other people's permission to put yourself first.

This depends on what you perceive to be a dick or selfish move. Obviously, randomly calling someone you don’t know a “cunt” & punching them in the face is being a dick, but is flirting back with a girl who’s got a boyfriend at a party you’re at being a dick?

You have to set these boundaries for yourself & your morals, because that’s the gray zone. It depends on the situation or example bc not everything is always black & white.

Sometimes, you will come off as a tiny bit of a dick but this should only bother you if you absolutely care of what others think of you. You should not give a fuck. If it’s not getting you fired from a job or ruining your relationships with your friends/family, then it shouldn’t be that bad of a “dick move”.

It's easier to be an asshole, and then turn it down, rather than be nice, and try to find a healthy point of assholery. Selfishness is actually rewarded in men, and the opposite will actually get you punished.

How do I put myself first and be "selfish" without being a dick?

Be aggressive, be aware. Do not apologize. You'll begin to get a sense of when you've gone too far, and can then tone it down.

You be selfish in that you make yourself, your goals, your mission, first priority, throughout your life, with or without friends/loved ones. Do selfless acts (gifts, acts of service, taking care of someone) because you want to, doesn’t come with strings attached, and it does not compromise your priorities.

Example - you have a LTR, but got the job of your dreams halfway across the country. In order to reach your career goals, this job is the best bet. You should NOT give that up to stay with the LTR; you need to be selfish and accomplish your goals.

Conversely, say you were out with good company, either with friends or with a date. You have extra disposable income, and you offer to foot the bill for the outing because you enjoy the company of the person/people, you honestly want to do something nice, and it doesn’t seriously detriment you to lose the money. Do it.
