Always maintain that you HAVE A GIRLFRIEND. Make up a name, age and hair colour for her. Hell, put a photo of her on your desk.
This way you can accept social engagements but noones bitch-ego will get hurt when you decline.
Find a random girl to pretend to be your date or turn up at work sometime, that would be hilarious too. She doesn't even need to look like the photo on your desk, girls change shape and hairstyles all the time.

I wouldn't say lying is the best option but to me this is the best option just not as extreme. I will tell them I am dating someone and I don't know if that is a good idea to give my number out
