If you're soft spoken, you seem nervous and insecure, hence the shy label.

Speaking confidently and projecting your voice will give you a stronger room presence, and you'll be more likely to get the "collected" label that you seem to want.

You can be calm and collected and still carry a conversation. Make your presence known (have good posture) and start conversations. I use to be very observant and well I still am but you can learn a lot from body language.

no, the cause is that you don't engage on a emotional level with people a base, human level. It used to be that women had gossip and men had sports, "war stories"(news) or technical issues. But with the bastardization of masculinity and the viralasation of information everything is gossip even specialised former "geek" areas like sports or gaming have been more about the people and their personal faux pas than the game, the skill or the technique.

confidence. But you need to understand that a confident person is not calm and collected out of fear, but rather because that is the appropriate behaviour within that circumstance(in a church, at a office, not while establishing rapport and shooting the shit).

You can not be relaxed if you still hold on to fear and judgement. Conversely once you let go of that negativity your true self will emerge(confidence) and with that you will behave in line with your own identity, which may or may not result in a withdrawn controlled behavior.
