Consideirng tech is the future, Id say you can't go wrong learning how to code. It's like learning Microsoft Office back in the 90s. It doesn't even have to do anything with ur major. Some company or a start up could be looking for new techies and pay well, it might turn into your calling. Would u not drop whatever you're doing now to code for $87k a year?

If you want to work as a manager or product manager in a tech company, a tech background is generally favored. To answer your question as someone in the industry:

You really only need to know how to write simple programs. Understand benefits and drawbacks of features vs fixing shit. Understand common industry problems such as feature creep and over-engineering. Understand how good engineering should be done.

Having a good foundation in programming and the tools to learn more is all you need from a business perspective.

I used to code, now I'm in tech sales. Java is everywhere but do yourself a favor and learn Javascript (nodejs) first. API and front end development in javascript is hot right now and doesn't suck as much as Java.

If you used Excel/Access a lot VBA can be most useful in the short term. Less in the long run

I suggest you start with Python. It's so easy.

World's runs on SQL. Strong if you have a data warehouse at work or backend access.

You don't need a CS degree to be a competent programmer.

What you do need is a goal -- what exactly do you wish to accomplish, besides the super broad "learn how to program"?

Learn... and do a couple of projects (they can be simple things). You will earn respect if you become a PM at a tech company, and both some experience on how hard it is actually to get something good going
