If he doesn't, you will have to pick up the slack. Many people go to school without parental help and you can do it too.

Ok. So this needs to be said.

You're your own man. While it is not an easy thing, you need to make your own path. That means assessing a situation and doing what's best for you.

It's clear that Dad has money issues. You cannot depend on him for anything, nor should you.

You want to go to University? Then get a job, save money, and do it yourself. You want a better job that pays more? Go get it. Who's stopping you from working two jobs, working in sales where the money is more dependent on commission...etc. You want an easy path? Not going to happen. Deal with it.

My daughter has been living on her own for years, and just finished up college. I pay, through my job, her health care. It's part of my coverage, I'd pay the same whether she was on or not. Everything else is taken care of by her. She worked two jobs at school, while playing college-level sports. She part-time works for a beverage company (when she has time, maybe a weekend night per month) because they want hot young chicks in bars to help sell booze. She's doing what she needs to, to take care of shit. Right now she's a $1000 in the checking, $2000 in savings. School ended a few months ago.

Are you telling me you're less than her?

You can't, really. You can ask as dependent offspring, but that's not a man to man talk. It will probably not hurt you to ask.

Call and talk to him, man to man. (If you can, make him feel proud of you.)

If he's really in another country, then he probably doesn't actually HAVE to pay you jack shit. So it's a good sign that he's at least sending SOMETHING.

Tell him you need the cash, it's an investment in your future. If possible, make it worth his while in some other way.
