If only there was a sidebar here on AskTRP, and if only someone on the board was a 25+ year corporate veteran who had written a series called "CorporateLand" that addresses all aspects of life in CorporateLand, including various types of salary negotiations.

Wouldn't that be great?

I was/still am in a similar situation. What I did was tell the boss that I was interested in joining them if there was a good opportunity in the future. But meanwhile I continue being a consultant. The boss told me that she was going to want to hire someone soon and would inform me so i can apply.

I recommend you do the same if you want to negotiate from a position of power. Just show interest and let it go. If they never call you then forget about it. And look for other jobs as well.

Good plan. In that first meeting, your message to your boss is essentially--I want to get hired permanently. What do I have to do, and when do you see it happening?

If the expectations and timing are reasonable, then meet the expectations and schedule another meeting when the time period has run out. Document everything. In the meantime, start looking for other jobs in case your boss decides not to honor his promise.

If the expectations and timing are unreasonable, let your boss know that means you'll be looking for a different job. That will go one of three ways.

"Oh shit, don't do that, we need you here." This gives you leverage that you can use.
"Yep, that makes sense and I understand." You start looking and part on good terms. Your boss will probably be a good reference for you in the future.
"In that case you can leave today." This only happens in shitty environments, which you should get the hell out of ASAP anyway.

Here is your biggest problem. If you don't know how valuable you are then you frankly have no chance and no one else will know how valuable you are most likely.

You should start by listing the things that makes you a valuable employee, the things you do that help the business make more money and re-read the corporateland on the side bar.
