Be really really hot. If your average or "above average" only these girls will message/respond you.

The hot women there are there for attention and would only go for a dreamguy type.

I tried that. I'm really good looking, ripped etc, all my exes are 8-9/10 and I can go to a party and get a girl whenever I want. When I created an onlinedating-profile tho, only these average/ugly 5-6 girls would respond or message me. I then created a profile with a picture of an underwear-model guy who showed his 6-pack and laughed at the camera and I got the hottest girls on there to send me naked pics lol.

You're more likely to find success in a bowling league than in online dating. It's a total waste of your time.

If, every time you think about sending a message to someone, you instead drop down and do pushups, that would be a better plan than actually sending that message.

I absolutely love online dating. I maintain accounts on several sites, some regular ones you've all heard of and some fetish ones to find girls who are into Domination/submission. (Actually, I find more D/s girls on the vanilla websites. Because I'm open about my preferences and on a site full of generic guys, that stands out.)

The great PUA pioneer Mystery did a workshop where he laid out the five traits women are attracted to. Study these, memorize them, internalize why they work. Then make every single sentence on your online dating profile support one of those five principles.

Women are attracted to men who are:

Pre-selected by women (mention other girls you have dated, and show that you have preferences because that means you have options)
A leader of other men (are you a boss at your job? Leader in a social group? "My good guy friends usually look to me for Friday night plans", etc.)
Successful risk-taker (have you traveled alone? Risked it all to start a business? Got onstage in front of 200 people and perform something? Talk about these things.)
Protector of Loved Ones ("my sisters are really important to me", "I give advice to my female friends," etc.)
Have a willingness to emote (show that you have feelings and a passion for life without seeming weak or whining about anything.)

Put a solid profile like that up and you should have a steady trickle of pink.

I've tried some online dating in the past, just to supplement what I was doing out in the real world. I'm gonna have to agree with some of the other posters here and say it is more or less a waste of time. I'm a pretty good looking guy and in good shape, and I find it hard to get messages from attractive women...and out in the real world, I have absolutely no problem at all. I've also noticed that even when I do get messages, I'll try to throw out some funny small talk and it just never seems to work...Sometimes it's hard to judge what to say online, when you have never even met the girl. I always find myself wondering if I said the wrong thing, or they are just humorless bitches. So I gave up on the online dating years ago...just my two cents.
