You could do that, but there's no reason to. Having "had a monetary figure in your head" doesn't really mean anything. If you want to, you can change your mind, and go on as you are. Why try to force yourself to do something that you don't really want to do?

You want to start a business, you need a BUSINESS PLAN.
You may know a lot about being a machinist, but what do you know about running a business? (Maybe you do - I don't know shit about you.)
Make SURE you have thought this through before you quit a job you like and run through your savings.
I'm not saying don't do it. I'm saying don't go off half-cocked.

why don't you invest that money in real estate, mutual funds etc instead of letting it sit and lose value in a bank?

True, it's not THAT much money but it's enough to buy a duplex or two depending on what part of the country your in, which could be an extra 1000 a month to collect rent and occasionally do maintenance . That's too much money to just be wasting away in a bank.
