Don't compliment a girl until you've slept with her. Giving her compliments will make you uninteresting as hell and is no part of a real conversation.

I read somewhere that by age 18 people have programmed responses to most of the "small talk" questions that you are alluding to. The trick to keeping interesting conversations going is to break the person you are talking to out of the programmed responses and getting them to actually tell you about themselves. For instance, a common small talk question is, "what do you do?" They tell you, " I work for x company in x capacity.." Then you say, "oh well what do you like about working there?" Or something to that effect. I'm sure you can think of a million ways to add on to the typical small talk questions that you would follow up a compliment with. This will help them build comfort with you, and also give you more and more ways to continue the conversation until you want to leave or try to escalate.

It's not a monologue. After you open her, shut your mouth and wait for her to contribute. Put the pressure on her to say something. You can handle silence, she can't. She will say something panicky and stupid, use this softball to tease and build comfort.

If she doesn't contribute, say goodbye and walk away. Don't give vacuous women any of your time.

Everyone else is saying this, but it's a back and forth.

If she can't hold up her end, then she's the shy type (if you're into that), or she is not interested.
