Religions are early codifications of civilization, many of their "beliefs" are guidelines for its sustainability & growth. In a nutshell, civilization is its own windfall in being a summary of what shapes the male impulse for power as well as what results of it. Sex is an incentive for men to be useful: any sustainable society requires most of its men to contribute.

Ergo the incentive of procreation is best split evenly to recruit the ingenuity of the greatest number of men.

If all red pill teachings were correct,

RP is a reaction to Feminism optimized for our current cultural state (of decline). These aren't guidelines that would work in a healthy society - monogamy restricts genetic optimization in favor of mobilizing a greater portion of society.

As humans, we are hyper-herd animals. The early men understood that all men, including themselves, must suppress their urge to fuck all the women they can so that the majority of men, the undesirable men, still have an incentive to be productive (most men's productivity was required to sustain an early society) as it would give them a chance to become father & husband. Societies and villages with unproductive men deteriorated and collapsed or got conquered.

So, you see, the system of smoke and mirrors emerged. It is required that most men believe in monogamy and their fair shot at it - or they wouldn't be productive. But the desirable men (like all men, alas they are the only ones able to actualize it) and all women still have the instinctual urge for genetic optimization which is manifested as cheating.

This has thus far been the only known way to strike a balance between optimizing both civilization & genetic selection.

Even with today's technology, much of it is there simply to support previous technology and still requires humans for maintenance and adjustments so that it may remain effective - therefore, the smoke & mirrors system is still in play.

What changed is that social media, higher population densities and birth control are all in favor of genetic optimization.

Marriage holds in check both sexes natural mating.

Men want sex, women want committment. Marriage provides both of these things in a stable manner.

Offering a stable institution for reproduction is better for children, and keeps men happy and devoted to their wife even after they hit the wall. In turn, it was often considered sinful for a woman to withhold sex from her husband, so he had access to sex even when he was more of a beta male.

In short, it's been endorsed because it is best for society, not because it allows the individual to indulge in their hedonistic instincts.

I'd also like to point out that monogamy as you termed it hasn't always been supported by religion. In the Old Testament many of the men had multiple wives, and Solomon had tons of concubines.
