My experience with folks who've had open relationships is that one of two things unfolds:
1) The woman easily wins the numbers game because attention-seeking pussy + pussy-seeking cocks = female victory in the fewest moves possible. The guy loses because as it turns out, he can't roll like she can. Also, the compounding effect of feeling like a loser, knowing others guys are banging his wife and he ain't gettin' any poos-poos, seems to cause him to emit massive loser signals in all directions.
2) The woman goes monkey shit because she was trying to appease her male partner, and then she gets jealous when he rolls with it and gets laid.
The net effect tends to either be the guy comes away degraded and feeling like a loser, or the chick gets so jealous that murder-suicide starts to become a high-probability scenario.

It can be if you lead the way: establish ground rules, establish boundaries, figure out whether or not you two are going to remain as each other's 'primary', and lead the way in maintaining open and brutally honest communication. If you don't have consistent open-and-honest communication this will blow up in your face and end very fucking badly.
Maintaining a successful monogamous relationship can be hard enough without the million new wrenches that polyamory throws in. It's not just about sex, it requires more effort and a level of self-awareness most people don't fucking have. Else, it can be fun.
