To unpack this, I think what's making you confused about all this is assuming that "status" means faking status. This is not the case. The same way that having a nice car is not being successful.

I'll use my father and brother as examples.

My father worked in a very particular field. Everyone who is moderately successful in that field knows each other around the country. After he retired, Men in his field would contact him or visit to get advice. After he died, many VERY successful people who realistically surpassed my father in status would regularly tell me how much of an impact he made in their life. How he helped them become who they are, and how even after his retirement he was still sought for his advice. His success did not come with financial security, we were not well off. But there was nowhere in the country I could go where I didn't feel like I could contact someone from his network and be looked after if shit hit the fan.

My brother decided to enter that same field. For many years, my brother had the "status" of being my father's son. People who knew my father would be sure to look after my brother. He hated it. As much as we both looked up to our father, my brother still wanted to make his own success. He worked tirelessly to make that happen, and specialised in areas different to my father. He has since gone on to surpass our fathers success. I now hear stories from VERY successful people in related fields, on a global level, about how my brother has impacted their lives and even the very way their work is now done. My brother also does not have much financial success from this. He is secure, but doesn't drive a flash car or own expensive, showy things.

The status of both my father and my brother means that when they are/were in a profession setting, everyone looks to them for guidance. They respect their opinion as though gospel. It means that outside of a professional setting, if they were to enter a building and people who know their work spot them, they would treat them (and anyone with them) like royalty.

It opens doors for you. There is nowhere my brother cannot feel secure in himself. He knows he has built this success, and the "status" that comes with it is bestowed on him by others. Willingly and openly. He does not ask for it, he does not need to "show" anything. When he enters a room, he enters as a man that has achieved his status by simply being the fucking best. No tricks, no faking it. And no amount of amoging, bravado or splashing cash can compete with his smug fucking arse. Everyone fucking loves him.

Fuck I hate my brother. Fat fuck.
