Workplace dynamics question. Why, often, instead of promoting own employees, companies hire new people from outside of a company, to fill supervisory/management roles? What are the benefits, from the perspective of higher management and/or company owners?

You can come in with freedom/flexibility to set new policies and you have no awkward prior relationships with former peers to juggle. Similarly, you bring new fresh ideas from other companies. It's a bit like asking why people don't fuck their cousins.

In this day and age companies only want candidates that are PERFECT fit for a position. Which is a catch 22 because how can you be a perfect fit for a position you have no experience in?

Companies are so myopic they can't see the long term benefit in internal promotion and training. It's quicker easier cheaper to bring in somebody who had the same job before somewhere else.

Because nobody is fit for the job. If you worked years with your coworkers on the same level it doesn't matter if your skills are up to the task, the social dynamics just won't be there.

A foreign candidate who's resume looks like he would be a perfect fit while bringing in all these fresh ideas looks better than some guy you see everyday that probably has the same qualifications, but seems to be "just one of us" or "never wowed anybody."

This is why it's beneficial to job hop every 2-3 years, especially early career. The days of our grand parents are gone when you basically picked a company after graduating high school, and worked for them until you died. The workplace in our generation is much more dynamic.

If someone is promoted from a position they are good at, then the company has to then not only train the person for the new job, but they also have to back fill the vacated position as well. Unless the person who gets the job internally is already mostly up to speed on the role, and doesn't need alot of training... this creates additional work for HR/ managers by now having to train 2 people for one position.

may be no one's qualified to move up.

May be cheaper to bring in someone that doesn't know when to ask for more pay.

May also be to bring in specific people from elsewhere and to make it look like there's a selection process.
