If it's an LTR then it's not really a bad thing to show beta traits sometimes. Beta traits are useful for bonding; you just can't go overboard or she'll lose respect. If it's a plate then I'd give her a bit less of my time just because I don't want her getting too cozy or think she can downgrade me. If it's a random girl then I'm likely not to talk to her again over it.

It's not a compliment. It falls into line with those "Real men hold doors open for ladies." type statements. A way to praise you for being a goon so you'll be a goon. When you're there with your puppy and you throw the ball and he brings it back what do you do? "Good boy!" and pat him on the head. Same thing. They are getting the most they can out of you for a simple pat on the head.

Whenever I'm met with that phrase, particularly from random women it's because I've done something thoughtful or helpful and I've never detected anything but authenticity behind the compliment. I never allow myself to be manipulated by conniving pleas for my help and only offer assistance or courteousness when I'm prompted to do so myself. I wouldn't read much into it in these types of circumstances beyond someone just expressing gratitude with feminine verbiage.
