Practice, practice, practice, practice, practice. Fake it till you make it seems to work quite well with things like this.

a lot of how you socialize with others is directly related to your relationship(s) with them.

for instance, if i am, say, the guest of a friend to his/her best friend from college's party, and they all know each other... naturally i am going to be out of the loop for a lot of stories / jokes / memories etc. sure, i will be talkative, but there will be plenty of times when i can't contribute to the conversation.

but if i am out drinking with my best friends, naturally my conversational potential will be at it's peak.

if you are a slow talker, there is not much you can do to change it besides talking more, and practicing. wit comes from within, and you need intelligence and perception to make quick/funny remarks. some days you might have it, other days you might not. just my 2 cents

and i hope for your sake, if this is an insecurity of yours, you don't drink too much, because you will only slur your words more frequently and come off worse

You want to be a quick thinker, not a quick talker. Talking slowly is good unless taken to an extreme. It shows that you're confident and what you're saying is important enough for them to take the time to listen to it. Talking too fast makes it look like you're afraid they'll lose interest, so you have to blurt it all out before they run away or something.
