Why? It shows you're interested in the girl, and it's one of those questions that kinda puts sex on the table right out of the gate without ever actually talking about sex.

Are you trying to be a fake pickup artist in real life who fucks anything unlucky enough to be caught in his field of vision

Or

Are you trying to just make friends and hope to pick up an amazing girl along the way who you want to spend extra time with as a girlfriend

But today I met a girl during a lecture and after a decent amount of conversation I just had to ask because I was pretty curious.

This doesn't come off as curiosity, it comes off as lack of attentiveness.

"Sort of," means that she's dating, but probably not seriously. Rolling her eyes means that your question and/or the way you asked it, demonstrated some quality that she found tiresome.

Look, it's a mildly worthless question. If she has someone, she'll reveal that in SOME way, if you're paying attention. This is a waste of time and asking it shows that you don't know how to pay attention.

I used to ask it indirectly until I took an arrow in the knee :p Seriously, after a while, she usually spits it out without even being asked. An indirect asking would be: "Well, the place X is great, I suggest you to take your boyfriend there with you". Usually, when she answers she doesn't have any, I jokingly answered: "Me neither".
