Texting is unpopular in this subreddit, but I've never had a problem with a little texting before a date. If you're charming and funny, texting can actually do good things to escalate and show your intentions. Plus if you learn a few things about each other it gives you something to talk about on the date. Like everything, it depends on you, the girl and the situation.
