Awkward silences/pauses, how do you avoid them?

Here is my take on awkward pauses and how they relate to confidence:

Get extremely comfortable with awkward pauses. Allow them to create tension. Make eye contact and smile. Take a moment to enjoy being out and having fun. Don't be scared of silence.
Practice observing. Playfully tease her about how she holds her glass when she drinks or how she pronounces "Tanqueray" and "Cayman".
Ask follow up questions. She mentioned to the group that she did a study abroad in Portugal, but you didn't get a chance to ask her about that yet. Bring it up now.
Memorize a few conversation starters as a fallback - ask for opinions or advice on travel, relationships, or something and use appropriately depending on who you are talking to.
If you continue to draw a blank, give some attention to someone in the group who has been somewhat quiet. Make sure they are having a good time and talking about things that are interesting to them. Help them be the center of attention for a while. This is an amazing and confident gesture. Demonstrate your security by not insisting the whole night be about you.
Allow yourself to focus more on "having fun" than on having momentum. Work with the changes of pace instead of against them.

After reading about it on seddit, I can only say that it's not important to keep the conversation going all the time. Take a break, look in her eyes and smile.

Stop expecting words to come out of mouths and there will not be any awkward pauses. Just silence.

If a girl is interested in you at least a little bit and a half decent conversationalist, she will try to resume convo after a bit of a pause.
