I've been noticing that most of the times that I strike out are due to other guys swooping in and stealing girls right in front of me.

Does anyone have any good tips for how to deal with these situations? I've tried several things. Escalating more quickly seems like the right thing, but it is usually a turnoff and can seem desparate. And being more reserved of course will make it easier for the other guys.
