I saw a cute girl on my flight last night and we ended up sitting next to each other. I figured that it could be tricky on a 2.5 hour flight as there was no escape, but I knew I would regret not trying. We both had food so I made a comment about that, talked about the usual demographic stuff (where she's from/currently living, etc). Used some light kino, I saw her jeans had rips all the way up her legs so I bumped my leg into hers and said "So do all your jeans look like that?" with a smirk. The conversation died down a few times and I just let it, I really didn't want to scramble for things to say for that long. But overall some good eye contact and some accidental hand and leg touching that I probably could have capitalized on, she would apologize and I just said "oh no problem!"
At one point she's trying to nap and asks if she can turn toward me. Again I don't use this at all, just "yea sure". I'm still not nervous at this point, just noticing my missteps in real time. When she wakes up I learn that she comes to my city every month or so just to go out and hit clubs as there aren't any in her small town. I offer to show her around some time and I get her number. Success! But now there's 30 minutes left and the conversation died again. I realized I was coming off too nice-guyish and realize that, although I've been comfortable with the interaction so far, I felt awkward about escalating at all in a place where I'm closely surrounded by people and in a situation that neither of us can easily escape if it goes south.
So it sort of died off at the end. Hugged at baggage claim and told her to call me if she's in the area I feel good about getting out there and getting a number for practice. But what criticism can you give me?
