In the US we have this formalized "let's go on a dinner date and talk about each others interests" thing. And then, you have to count the dates before your first kiss or when you go to bed, etc. it's a weird construct that is purely man made. In other countries people just hang out and hook up and then they are an item. It's not formal, there are no rules, expectations, etc. it's how "dating" should be.

I think it means there’s more of a ‘hook up’ culture than there is dating. People want the sex without strings attached. I don’t know if it’s true.

I dont think doing anything falls under the category of being on a date unless its specified or its a typical date situation(ex: asking someone out to dinner). While asking out to a walk is more just hanging out.
