The idea is that people who have more differentiated, abstract, and integrated dimensions for representing the social world will, in general, be more skillful communicators.

The most common way of measuring this degree of differentiation (also known as "cognitive complexity") is to ask people to write brief impressions of liked and disliked others.

These impressions are then scored by counting the number of unique descriptors in the impressions. More descriptors means higher "cognitive complexity."

If a descriptor is repeated it's not counted twice, but synonyms would be counted individually.

I didn't make these measures up. They go back at lest until the 1960s.

When I get back to my office, I'll add some references to bolster what I've written.

But you could google "constructivism" or "personal construct theory" or "role category questionnaire" to learn more.

It is hard to believe that the number of adjectives in a brief description could be a valid measure of communication competence, but it is.
