This is great, I’m very much still in the “fake it til you make it” stage. This is a good reminder to separate myself from the result, not to act confident but to work on being confident.

Ahm yep, I can only agree. My gateway to this state (from the state you wrote about) was actually accepting the "paradoxical reality" like ozzy wrote in "the physical game".
Lots of girls manage to juggle paradoxical realities all the time, so you can learn to be not needy while still basically wanting to close. That's not actually the state I ended up with, it was just the "gateway" that got me to where I am. If you want to know more about it, read the book.

What helped me was not doing things, like standing up for myself, because this is what girls like so I have to do it. This is already reactive and dependent on somebody else. I realize the reasons why I should do this for myself and whatever the consequences they had on my social life, I didn't care, they wouldn't be that significant anyway. I believed in the why behind standing up for myself and so it's sturdy versus standing up for yourself because you think girls like it, which is flimsy.
