I don't have many friends on campus
Start here. This can totally change college for you and should be more important than approaching females for the sake of approaching females.
If you aren't in any clubs or organizations, it's time to get involved. Start participating in class, start spending time around campus engaging with people, and have some fun.
In fact, my advice would be to stop cold approaches altogether until you have a solid social circle. Having real, genuine friends is way more important than talking to girls anyway, and it's flabbergastingly easy to meet women through a good social circle in college.

Bud, if it's easier for you to talk to strangers on campus than your own friends and their friends, your social circle is shit. Time to get some women involved.

I appreciate the advice but my issue with this is that I do very poorly in group settings. I can speak 1 on 1 or 1 on 2 but i start getting very nervous around more people. Besides I know I am going to transfer to a different college next year so figure that any social circle i make here won't help me in the long run
This is why I figure that I have to approach. The only real thing holding me back is AA

In this moment where you feel hesitant even though you think it's a good opportunity, think about covering them with s dark black blanket abut keep about 6 inches distance until about halfway in the conversation and the touch their elbow or something and also bed over while laughing and kind of holding your stomach and then abruptly ask for her number after she is answering some question and keep a straight face for two seconds and then smile a little and be like "what" in a cute way " I just want your number I like you" it's all about on the inside being an aggressive alpha but being a little more cute on the outside.
