I get that dating is a numbers game, you have to increase your number of fails before you can find one who would even consider swapping numbers. But almost everywhere I go, almost everyone is looking into their phones, listening to music, reading a book, or in an large group. Whether it is a gym, pub, library or on public transport. This to me is a big sign saying they don't want to be disturbed, I know I rather wouldn't want a stranger to talk to me if I'm doing any of those. Also, I guess this might be a South-East England thing, but I honestly rarely ever see strangers talking in public places anyway, unless pushed.

I can get a short conversation out of, say, bar staff, baristas or retail workers, but they have a job to do, and can't really engage for more than a few minutes. Would like to practice going up to strangers to initiate a conversation, but I don't really have a means to practice safely in my everyday life. Would appreciate any advice!
