I'd say just ask her even when her friends are around. Don't ask it when everyone's paying attention to you (after you finished telling a story), just slide it in there. Don't try to hide the fact you're asking her out, don't shout it either. Ask her out matter of factly.

You approached her but didn’t ask for her number? What did you say, and how did you close? If she’s always with her friends, she’s always with her friends. Nothing you can do about that. Either wait around until you see her alone, or ask in front of her friends. Definitely don’t ask one of her friends of her number. GL
