You should either start with that second line or try and create a casual conversation off your opening. Admitting to a disingenuous initial question is a bad look, it either looks unconfident or manipulative, or both.

If you're going to approach during the day, I think direct is better. If you just have an aimless conversation it can come off as weird and she is left wondering what your intentions are. At least if you open directly ("Excuse me, this is really random but I thought you looked cute and I wanted to say hi") she knows immediately why you are there. Your first impression is that you are straight to the point, confident, and 100% authentic. That's never a bad image to put up.

I would have said instead "oh where are you from, etc" going immediately for the "you're pretty" line is quite a stretch and doesn't leave her with much of a reply, other than say, "so are you" and then your work is cut out for you.
Great job getting out there! It's quite easy once you get things going.

It's ok to do a compliment about her look first. But of course you don't proceed to asking for her number straight away, some trivial talk should be in between.
