Opened a two set with something situational. There was one that was definitely my target, and I quickly said "You look very elegant, what's your name?" I introduced myself to both, and chatted a bit. The target mentioned it was really hot near the lamp (always a problem), so I said "yeah come here" and we moved to the other side of the little walkway. Friend didn't follow, so I had isolation--and at this point a certain degree of compliance as well.
Light chatting, I asked her what she did aside from going out (if anything). She did stuff like snowboarding and off-road dirt biking or whatever. My response was a kind of calm "ok interesting", neither too enthusiastic about her answers--but I probably could have given her some light teasing.
I was in a mode of "oh shit she's talking to me what do I do". She was quite attractive, so I wasn't really expecting for this to get very far. I did some light kino, made some statement of intent I don't remember.
I said "you seem like you have a very dry sense of humor". She perked up a bit at that, and confirmed. I asked if she watched British comedy, she said yeah Top Gear (which she admitted wasn't really a comedy, and I really should given her shit for that answer). I should have pursued the British television thread more, but I made another little statement of intent. Her larger group of friends return, and she reengaged them.
During this interaction, I kind of lost sight of something I have been trying to implement/pay attention to, which is Todd's FRED hooking model. I have been working on trying to get the F and the R (Focus and Relevance). FRED is something that appears in every cycle of an interaction. In the beginning, I had enough Focus, Relevance, and Emotion for her to take the decision to move with me and continue the conversation. I did not have enough for her to choose to keep talking with me over her friends. I think emotion and tension were lacking in our conversation, and I don't think I should have pressed on with further statements of intent until I had a deeper hook. The next way-point in the interaction was a more substantive conversation, with more tension and emotion. Instead, I tried to move it forward off a weak foundation.
