Being a flirt isn't necessarily a bad thing... Having said that, being a flirt as a student is seen as a bad thing.

It's difficult with students, because the usual rules don't apply. For instance, a lot of my closest friends are at uni - in fact all of them are, whereas I work full time. Despite being the same age and very similar in many ways, when we go out things are seen very differently. For instance, as a student there is a likelyhood that the people you were 'flirting' with, you will see again on a potentially daily basis. I am extremely hung over, so tell me if this doesn't make sense, but the problem isn't always with you. In this case, I would expect the problem to be: They don't want to be seen as interested in the flirt because it makes them a slut automatically, even if you don't sleep with them. Being seen as a flirt is like being seen as someone that doesn't have interest in relationships (and rightfully so) but is only interested in attention from whoever gives it to them, and no one wants to be 'suckered' into it.

Or at least this is what I have seen in groups of students that include my friends.

When you aren't a student it is completely different, because people don't really know you, and won't really see you after that particular instance, so they aren't as hung up about it.

In this day and age being kind and polite is often taken and given the negative title of a 'flirt'. I look at it as a compliment, and if people are going to look at you negative for it then they were not worth your time.

I'd say just keeping being you dude. Being a flirt isn't a bad thing at all. Girl s are "flirts" all the time and no one minds. Just live it up man. Have fun. The girls will see your good time and want to be around you.

Being called a "flirt" in a way could be construed to being a "tease". By not having any serious intentions (not escalating, kino, etc) they saw that they weren't going to get anywhere with you. The girls start talking and BLAM no one is about you anymore.
