So I was in Lisbon the other day and visited a public classical concert of one of my favorite composers with my best friend, with whom I was there on holiday.

It was quite a huge crowd and after some time I noticed 2 blonde girls arriving. I was in a really joyful mood and just glanced at them with a smile. They looked back from time to time and one of them smiled too.

Normally I would just approach them, but I was really enjoying the music and I sat down on the sidewalk and closed my eyes.

A few minutes later they were standing in front of me and I really considered approaching them, but I was kinda surprised and unsure if I was the reason for their change of Postion. They then sat down a bit further down the sidewalk, where I had to turn my head to look at them.

After some time I stood up and placed myself near them and was quite surprised that one of them was quickly scrambling something on a piece of paper. Was that for me? Cant be...

So one girl left and the other one who smiled at me clearly in the beginning approached me and told me her friend wanted me to have the note if I was single. I chatted a bit about their plans for the evening (very smart move). The note said " I saw you were moved by the music and I was moved by you. We should meet. here´s my number.... "And went off to a few bars with my buddy feeling really excited.

Well until I checked the number and realized that it belonged to an unfriendly Portuguese man. Apparently she had forgotten to add her country code. So I rushed to the bar they planned to visit ( I knew that from talking to the other girl) and met them there. Lucky me!

She (the girl who wrote the note) was very pleased to see me and her friend quickly left us alone and we chatted about old music and our tastes. We really got along great. She had to go quite soon and I wanted to kiss her. But when I layed my arm around her she went for it. She told me that she did not like it that rough and we exchanged a few gentler kisses. We agreed to write tomorrow about our date (I got her real number by now) but she could not say where she would be tomorrow because she was couchsurfing. I think that was my first mistake, because I only had one day left in Lisbon and I should have proposed a exact time and place!

So the next morning I messaged her over Whatsapp about our date. I did not get a reply and only half of my message was delivered.

She told me the day before she would visit the biggest flea market in Lisbon early the next day. I planned to go there as well but, I was out drinking and so I arrived there at about 2 pm. And guess who walked pass me without noticing me? What a coincidence.

I tapped her on the shoulder and we talked a moment. She was really happy and joyful but I felt kind of insecure. I was in my most ragged clothes and had not thought about what I would say before I tapped her shoulder. I told her where to meet, but she would not agree upon a time. They were off to the beach and she could not say when they would be back. "I´ll text you" she said.

We said goodbye and I tried to kiss her, but was shut off. She told me maybe later on our date. By then I really had screwed up. I wanted to come off confident by kissing her in sight of her friends in bright daylight, but this was just awkward. If I did not blew it before by now it was over.

And of course the text never came. I texted her that I really enjoyed our conversation the night before and asked why It did not workout. She said they underestimated the time from the beach back and it was just bad timing on her part. I dont know about that. If she really would have wanted to meet there would have been a way.

But It was wonderful for my ego to be kissed and approached by a wonderful girl. And that all because of a smile. I never believed that would work...

Regardless I certainly made a few mistakes. Mainly not fixing a time for our date and believing she would text me. Maybe I was too confident as well and therefore put in less effort than usual. So being approached as a guy is still not a free pass. Still a nice experience. And it shows me what a smile can do.
