Make sure to express yourself, express your feeling, try to communicate that you thing she's cute/sexy/whatever, this is essential.

I hope that staying normal shows confidence and keeps me as the leader.

It might, but it surely isn't good if you're trying to flirt/escalate. Read Models for more on that, basically try to always communicate your feelings and show vulnerability, don't just do the poker face or try to look cool, that will never lead to anything, believe me.
